CAL STATE FULLERTON

THE CHALLENGE
Enhance a fine arts auditorium with an acoustical ceiling canopy, leaving the audience speechless.

THE PLAY
Suspended at a 10-degree tilt from the ground plane, this truly unique canopy was to feature 39 large panels that varied in size and shape. To begin, 3form and Pfeiffer Partners chose Varia Ecoresin material, given its heat forming properties and high performance in acoustical shapes.

In the planning phase, 3form used 3-D Rhino to create a model to explore the relationships between the 39 different panels. 3form designed custom hardware and engineered all of the connections between the panels and the frame. A mock-up panel was then assembled to test the tolerances and curvature, while also presenting color, finish, and light transmission for client approval.

3form fabricated the panels at their state-of-the-art facility. Shop drawings and clear labeling simplified the assembly of the canopy and streamlined the installation. 3form also provided two large cradles and an on-site representative to assist with the arrival of the panels.

THE RESULT
In a premium auditory space, the canopy shines in the visual orchestra. It is as functional as it is attractive, earning and absorbing round after round of applause.
